If you’ve been putting off replacing your heating and cooling system because of the upfront cost, you’re not alone. It’s one of the biggest investments most homeowners make, and it’s not exactly the fun kind of spending. But here’s the thing — if you live in the Decatur, Athens, or Hartselle area and get your electricity from a TVA distributor like Decatur Utilities, Athens Utilities, or Hartselle Utilities, there’s a program that can take a real bite out of that cost.
It’s called TVA EnergyRight, and between their rebates and their financing options, most of our customers end up paying a lot less than they expected. The problem is, almost nobody explains how it actually works. So let’s fix that.
What Is TVA EnergyRight?
TVA EnergyRight is a program run by the Tennessee Valley Authority and your local power company. It’s designed to help homeowners upgrade to more energy-efficient equipment by offering two things: rebates that put cash back in your hand after the install, and on-bill financing that lets you pay for the system over time right on your electric bill.
The catch (if you can even call it that) is that the work has to be done by a contractor in TVA’s Quality Contractor Network. That’s a group of licensed, insured contractors who meet TVA’s standards for installation quality. We’re a member of the QCN, so if you work with us, you’re automatically covered.
The Rebate Side: Money Back After the Install
TVA EnergyRight offers rebates on a surprisingly wide range of upgrades. We’re talking heat pumps, central AC, ductless mini splits, geothermal systems, tune-ups, duct sealing, insulation, and more. The rebate amounts vary depending on the type of equipment and its efficiency rating, and they can add up fast — especially if you’re doing more than one upgrade at the same time.
We’ve put together a full breakdown of every available rebate on our HVAC Rebates page, so we won’t repeat the whole list here. But here’s what most people want to know: how does the process actually work?
Here’s the short version:
- You call us and we come out for a free estimate. We help you pick the right system and tell you which rebates apply.
- We install the system.
- We submit your project to TVA EnergyRight on your behalf. (You don’t have to do anything for this step.)
- TVA sends you an email with a link to claim your rebate.
- You click the link, confirm the project, and a check shows up in your mailbox a few weeks later.
That’s it. No tax forms. No waiting until April. No hoops to jump through.
And here’s something a lot of folks miss — you can stack multiple rebates on the same project. If you’re replacing your heat pump and adding insulation and sealing your ducts, you can claim a separate rebate for each one. It’s one of those situations where doing more work up front actually pays you back more.
The Financing Side: No Big Check Required
Let’s say the rebates help but the upfront cost still feels steep. That’s where TVA EnergyRight’s on-bill financing comes in.
If you’re a Decatur Utilities, Athens Utilities, or Hartselle Utilities customer, you can finance your new system with zero money down and have the payment added right to your monthly electric bill. It’s a fixed-rate loan, so the payment doesn’t change. And because your new system is more efficient than the one it’s replacing, the energy savings you see every month help offset that new line item on your bill.
We go into all the specifics — loan amounts, terms, rates, eligibility, and how it compares to our Goodleap financing option — on our Financing Options page. The short version: most of our customers who go this route choose the 10-year plan, and the on-bill convenience is tough to beat.
Here’s the key thing: rebates and financing aren’t an either/or situation. You can use both on the same project. Finance the system through TVA EnergyRight, and then get a rebate check mailed to you on top of it. That rebate money is yours to keep — put it back in savings, use it for something else, whatever you want.
What About the Federal Tax Credit?
If you’ve seen articles about a federal tax credit for energy-efficient HVAC equipment, there’s an important update. The Energy Efficient Home Improvement Tax Credit (Section 25C) expired on December 31, 2025. It’s no longer available for new installations.
That said, there’s a potential replacement on the horizon. Alabama’s Department of Economic and Community Affairs (ADECA) is developing a Home Energy Rebates program funded by the Inflation Reduction Act. It hasn’t launched yet, but when it does, the expected rebate amounts are significant. We’re watching it closely and will share details as soon as the program goes live. You can check our rebates page for the latest info.
Why Does This Matter Right Now?
We get this question a lot: “Should I wait for a better deal?” And honestly, the answer is almost always no.
Here’s why. Your old system is costing you money every single month in higher energy bills. If it’s over 10 years old and running on R-22 refrigerant, parts are getting harder to find and more expensive to buy. Every month you wait is another month of higher bills and another month closer to a breakdown that forces an emergency replacement — which always costs more and gives you fewer options.
The TVA EnergyRight rebates are available now. The financing is available now. And spring is the best time to replace a system because the schedule isn’t slammed the way it gets in July when everyone’s AC goes out the same week.
We’ll Walk You Through All of It
This stuff can feel complicated when you’re reading about it online. It feels a lot simpler when you’re sitting at your kitchen table with one of our guys, looking at the actual numbers for your house. We’ll show you what a new system costs, what rebates you qualify for, what your monthly payment would be with financing, and what you’d save in energy costs.
No pressure. No gimmicks. Just the information you need to make a smart decision on your schedule.
