We hear “HVAC Service” and “HVAC Maintenance” used interchangeably often, or we’re asked if there is a difference between the two. Service and maintenance are not the same thing, so today, we’re going to break down the difference.

Defining HVAC Service vs. HVAC Maintenance

Simply put, needing HVAC service refers to needing repairs done, while HVAC maintenance is referring to preventative measures that help improve performance and extend the life of your system.

Think of your heating and cooling system like your car – when you’re having maintenance done, you’re having the oil changed, the tires rotated, and your filters replaced. You know these are necessary for the performance and longevity of your vehicle. It’s the same principle for your HVAC system.

When you hear a weird sound coming from your car or you notice something isn’t working correctly, you take it in to be serviced. The mechanic will look at the vehicle and discover what is causing the problem, along with looking for issues that may cause a problem in the future. HVAC service works much the same way.
